Toileting Policy
All students must be fully toilet independent to attend St. John’s Lutheran School. This means that they must adhere to all of the following skills with both urination and bowel movements.
To be considered toilet independent:
Once in the bathroom:
In the case of accidents occurring, there will be a parent and teacher meeting on the same day as the second accident to discuss the situation. After the third accident, the student is to stay home for one month of school or as long as it takes to be toilet independent. They must come back completely toilet trained. Parents are required to continue tuition payments in order to hold their student’s placement at St. John’s.
We are fully aware this transition is not seamless. We begin every school year with a grace period for accidents until September 15th. All accidents after that time will be recorded and will follow the three strike policy. The strikes are tallied by semester. Any existing strikes reset after the student returns from Christmas break.
Please remember that toileting at school or other unfamiliar surroundings is different than being fully toilet independent at home. Take time to give your child opportunities to work independently at church, libraries, and friends’ homes to make sure they are capable of meeting the expectations at St. John’s.
To be considered toilet independent:
- Students do not wear pull-ups or training pants, not even for medical reasons.
- Students are able to identify the need to use the bathroom.
- Students communicate using words and are able to get to the toilet independently.
Once in the bathroom:
- Students need to be able to pull down their own pants and underwear below their knees.
- Students need to be able to get on the toilet seat on their own, without assistance.
- Students need to be able to wipe themselves.
- Students need to be able to pull their own pants and underwear up.
- Students need to be able to flush the toilet.
- Students should not completely undress to use the toilet. This includes socks and shoes.
- Students are expected to use soap and water to wash their hands after every bathroom experience.
